Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl Boss
Throughout his 40+year career, Springsteen has earned several awards for his work, including 18 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. He has sold more than 65 million albums in the U.S. and 120 million worldwide.
Springsteen was born in 1949 and raised in a working class family in New Jersey. At an early age he was inspired to play music by Elvis Presley. In the 1960s Springsteen played in various bands and honed his musical skills. In 1972 Springsteen signed a record deal with Columbia Records and recruited many of his fellow New Jersey musicians for the formation of the E Street Band. Springsteen’s first album was a critical success and a commercial failure. However Springsteen found overall success with his second release, ‘Born to Run.’ Triumphantly, Springsteen appeared on the cover of Time magazine and its competing magazine in the same week. Rolling Stone magazine would later call a performance during this period one of the ‘50 Moments That Changed Rock and Roll.’
To date, his most famous albums are ‘Born to Run’ and ‘Born in the U.S.A.’; both epitomize his penchant for working class America themes. Springsteen is also widely recognized for his album ‘The Rising,’ which he released in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks. ‘The Rising’ was Springsteen’s first studio album in 7 years and his first with the E Street Band in 18 years. The album was a critical and commercial success and is popularly referred to as the return of ‘The Boss.’ ‘The Rising’ was one of two albums to receive Rolling Stone magazine’s highest rating of five stars for 2002.

Springsteen is married to fellow E Street Band member singer Patti Scialfa. The couple have three children and reside on a horse farm in New Jersey. Springsteen was previously married to the actress Julianne Phillips in the mid to late 1980s. Springsteen and his wife and family have managed for the most part to remain out of the spotlight of celebrity magazines like People, Star, Us Weekly and OK! magazine.
The E Street Band was inactive from the end of 1988 through early 1999, except for a brief reunion in 1995. Current members of the band are Springsteen, Garry Tallent, Clarence Clemons, Max Weihberg, Roy Bittan, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, Patti Scialfa, Soozie Tyrell and Charles Giordano. For more on these talented musicians, read Rolling Stone magazine archives.
will air on television on February 1.

Jennifer Hudson to Sing National Anthem at Super Bowl

Jennifer Hudson will Sing the National Anthem at Super Bowl
In what is likely to be her first public appearance since the murder of her mother, brother, and nephew, Jennifer Hudson will sing the national anthem at the year’s biggest sporting event.
The teams that will be playing in Tampa, Florida in this year’s Super Bowl are still yet to be decided. But everyone in attendance and watching around the world will be treated to a national anthem sung by American Idol phenom Jennifer Hudson. Hudson has been in the news most recently because of the horrific murder of her mother, brother, and nephew only a few months ago. Her sister’s estranged husband has been arrested as the prime suspect in the murders and he is currently in jail awaiting trial.
In addition to her success on American Idol, Jennifer Hudson already has an Oscar on her resume, a result of her win for Best Supporting Actress in the smash hit, Dreamgirls. She also had successful acting turns in the Sex and the City movie, as well as The Secret Life of Bees.
The Super Bowl typically draws one of the biggest viewing audiences in the world every year - and this year should be no different. In addition to Hudson’s anticipated performance of the national anthem, Bruce Springsteen will be performing the halftime show. For those that will be watching the game for the game itself, and not the entertainment, this year seems to offer at least a more palatable selection of singers. This year is conspicuously without any boy bands or pop princesses - but I just can’t imagine that I’m not going to see the Jonas Brothers during the Super Bowl. No way that Fox is going to miss out on that slam dunk of a marketing opportunity.
As the world watches, hopefully Jennifer Hudson’s performance will help to bring her a sense of normalcy after such a trying period in her life.
