Obama comes out against Cardinals in Super Bowl

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said he’s pulling for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Arizona Cardinals in football’s biggest game on Sunday - and he did so with a politician’s touch.

Obama said Thursday that he would root for Pittsburgh against the "long-suffering" and "great Cinderella story" Cardinals. His spokesman also said the president would watch the game with members of Congress.

"I have to say, you know, I wish the Cardinals the best," Obama said diplomatically. "You know, Kurt Warner is a great story, and he’s closer to my age than anybody else on the field."

Warner, Arizona’s 37-year-old quarterback, came out of nowhere about a decade ago to take the St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls, including a title in 2000. Just when he seemed washed up, Warner rose to the top again this year with a stellar performance. His team was not expected to make the playoffs, let alone get to the title game.

Steelers owner Dan Rooney, a longtime Republican, endorsed Obama’s presidential bid and campaigned for him. During Oval Office remarks, Obama noted that one of the Steelers most beloved former players, Franco Harris, had campaigned for him in Pittsburgh, too.

"Other than the (Chicago) Bears," Obama said, "the Steelers are probably the team that’s closest to my heart."

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said the invitation to watch the Super Bowl is part of the new administration’s efforts to work across the political aisle, similar to his bipartisan cocktail party Wednesday night at the executive mansion.

"You know, the president also wanted last night to be a little bit more social, you know, so that individuals could better get to know each other and understand where they’re coming from in these legislative disagreements," Gibbs told reporters Thursday. "But, again, you know, the president’s outreach on this will continue."

During the pregame show, Obama also planned to participate in a live interview on NBC with Matt Lauer.

Cardinals Fans deserve Super Bowl Victory update 1-29-09

January 28th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Below the Rim: Cardinal fans deserve Super Bowl victory

By Chris Potter

Last Updated:4:01 PM EST 1/28/09

Imagine being a fan of the Arizona Cardinals.

In the 88 years prior to the 2008 season, the franchise had won a grand total of two playoff games. Yup, that averages out to one playoff victory every 44 years. The reality happened to be worse. Cardinals fans saw 10 different presidents occupy the White House in the 51 years between playoff wins in 1947 and 1998.

And you thought Bills fans have it rough? The Cardinals had only given their faithful one winning season since 1984. Try getting excited to root for that level of mediocrity season after season.

Not only did Arizona define the term "playoff drought," but the franchise became synonymous with losing, filling the same niche as the Los Angeles Clippers in basketball and, until recently, the Tampa Bay Rays in baseball. During that long stretch of futility, calling Arizona a Super Bowl contender would have been nothing more than an oxymoron.

Then along came the 2008 edition of the Cardinals. Coming off an 8-8 campaign under first-year head coach Ken Whisenhunt, Arizona was lightly regarded in most preseason power polls, mired in a nine-year absence from postseason play. A Super Bowl bid seemed about as likely as Vanilla Ice suddenly becoming cool again.

Arizona was able to take advantage of the weakest division in football (with apologies to the AFC West, which ran a close second in the ineptitude department). The Cardinals ultimately claimed the NFC West title with a 9-7 record, securing a home playoff game for the first time in more than half a century.

Many pundits promptly labeled them the worst team in the history of the playoffs. To be fair, Arizona’s performance over the final three games of the season, a stretch in which the Cardinals dropped two of three and were outscored 103-55, hadn’t done much to dispel the contention.

But none of that mattered once the Cardinals got in front of those victory-starved fans in the opening round. Arizona knocked off a fellow upstart in the Atlanta Falcons, then traveled to Carolina and demolished the heavily favored Panthers, 33-13.

The Cardinals returned home for an NFC Championship showdown with Donovan McNabb’s Eagles. Arizona overcame a second-half rally to cap off one of the most improbable Super Bowl runs in recent memory, finally rewarding one of the most downtrodden fan bases in all of sports and showing underdogs everywhere that there just might be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Although the Cardinals season is already successful beyond all expectations, it is yet to be determined if this Cinderella tale remains true to form and has a storybook ending

The game will be a classic clash of conflicting styles of play. Pittsburgh’s defense was the NFL’s best in 2008, regularly shutting down both the running and passing games of the opposition. The 3-4 scheme of defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau has given quarterbacks fits, as blitzes often result in QB’s picking turf out of their face masks, more dazed and confused than Matthew McConaughey’s character in the movie of the same name.

The Steelers formidable defense will be put to the test against the prolific offense of the Cardinals. The Eagles, no pushovers themselves, attempted to pressure Kurt Warner into making mistakes, but the veteran QB calmly stood in the pocket and picked them apart. If Warner has similar success against the Steelers, that vaunted defense will suddenly look very average. The two-time MVP has an embarrassment of riches to work with at the playmaking positions, led by Larry Fitzgerald.

The Steelers are favored, but the dream will continue. Take the Cardinals to go all the way, 27-20.

Will Cardinals Cover The Spread?

January 27th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Super Bowl 43 Prediction: Cardinals Will Cover Spread

>I am ready to make my prediction for Super Bowl 43.

As stated in my previous article, I had to wait until the smoke cleared to see if there would be any player related issues before announcing my prediction. Much to my dismay, there was not even dust in the air.

These two teams must have tasers attached to every one of their players, and if they even think of producing a distraction to their team, or giving the opposition any “billboard” material, they will get juiced, tased or any other way you wish to put it. Both organizations have done a tremendous job in keeping their players as low-key as possible.

(Editor’s Note: Not coincidentally, Vinny Tresselini is not happy about this.)

If you seen an interview of any player, you know exactly what I am talking about. Every player interview is being conducted as if the player just left the public relations/press conference classroom. The interviewer attempts to “bait” the player into some form of smak-talk against the other team. And the player, well coached from the P.R. classes, refuses to engage into the specifically asked question, and redirects the conversation into a “safe” area of discussion. What I am saying is that media week is going to be boring as hell because there is no Shannon Sharpe or Joey Porter personalities who will let it fly regardless of the repercussions. So I will be safe in making my prediction.

If everything stays on it’s current course of “boring as hell”, I expect Arizona to cover the current spread of six and a half points. While everyone is not giving Arizona a lottery odds chance of winning, I think that they have a great chance to not only cover, but win as well.

I am not as confident as I was about going moneyline on Tom Brady’s first Super Bowl appearance against the St. Louis Rams, but I am confident about the Cardinals covering the spread.

Here’s why:

I, as well as everyone else in this world, wrote the Arizona Cardinals off after they threw in the towel against the New England Patriots in week 16, in the 47 to 7 Anderson “Spider” Silva beatdown of which they were on the receiving end. This game, however, turned out to be the much needed “reality check” that this team needed.

Since getting pimp smacked by New England, the Cardinals could not have responded better, and could not have peaked at a better time. This meltdown finally screamed the fact that Arizona needed a run game, and they looked to the more-than-well-rested Edggerin James for answers. Not only did they establish a running game, but their defense finally found the field as well.

This parlays into my next point: Arizona definitely had the more difficult road to the Super Bowl.

The Cardinals had to win against a very tough Atlanta Falcons team with a great running game. They then went into Carolina and absolutely dismantled a team which many thought was the total package with their running game and defense, and were mentioned on several occasions as being the team which would represent the NFCCardinals-Steelers Prediction and Spread in the Super Bowl. Arizona then held off a determined, veteran Philadelphia Eagles team which was playing at a very high level and has had a lot of success in the playoffs under the Andy Reid-Donavan McNabb tenure. More impressive than the win, was the fact that they lost the lead in the second half and were able to regain the lead against one of the best Defensive Coordinators in the NFL.

And finally…. Ken Whisenhunt. Who better to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers than their previous offensive coordinator. He is of the same school and mindset as Mike Tomlin, and knows what Tomlin’s defense does and is capable of. As long as Whisenhunt and the Cardinals offensive line can keep Kurt Warner standing on two feet, the spread will be the least of Pittsburgh’s concerns.

What do you think?

Who do you think will win against the spread in Super Bowl 43?

Cardinals At The Super Bowl

January 27th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Cards find themselves at Super Bowl

TAMPA - Given the Cardinals’ performance in the playoffs, it figured that their charter flight to the Super Bowl would catch a tail wind and land a little early.

The wind, after all, has been at the Cardinals’ backs for the past month.

A team that found itself a month ago found itself arriving for Super Bowl XLIII on Monday, an amazing accomplishment considering the Cardinals didn’t participate in the first XLII of these title games.

Though the flight was shorter than expected, the Cardinals had plenty of time to reflect on a season and careers.

"Honestly, I had to fight some emotions," said defensive end Bertrand Berry, who is in his 11th NFL season. "It’s taken me this long, the ups and downs, the trials and all that; it’s overwhelming when you just stop and think about it. I tried to fight back tears."

Some players, such as Berry, have waited their whole careers to make it this far. Others, such as special-teams captain Sean Morey, were here just three years ago. That makes it no less special, said Morey, who will face his former team, the Steelers, on Sunday.

Though this appearance might be "surreal," Morey said, it also is no fluke. The seeds of the Cardinals’ resurgence were planted last spring when players started workouts with strength and conditioning coach John Lott.

No one saw this coming, but it’s not as if the Cardinals are being unjustifiably rewarded. Morey, for instance, has bounced around from team to team, from the Patriots to the Eagles to the Steelers and to Arizona. Last spring, he was even released by the Cardinals, who were juggling their salary-cap figure while Larry Fitzgerald’s contract was finalized.

"John Lott says it all the time," Morey said. "He says, ‘What you do in the dark shall shine in the light.’ I’ve spent a lot of time in the dark, so to speak, and I’ve never wavered.

"I’m just real happy, and I feel blessed and fortunate that I have another opportunity to play in a meaningful game in February."

The Cardinals are in their first Super Bowl, but certain parts of this trip should be familiar to them. They played in Tampa in 2007, and earlier this season stayed in a hotel outside Washington, D.C., for a week to prepare for their game against the New York Jets.

That didn’t turn out well. Tight end Leonard Pope and safety Adrian Wilson suffered injuries in practice that week. The Jets took a 34-0 halftime lead and won by 21, and the whole trip seemed like an experiment gone awry.

"It was a miserable trip; let’s be honest," Morey said.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said then the week would be good preparation for a Super Bowl. People smirked, but Whisenhunt’s comment proved prophetic.

"This situation (the Super Bowl) sort of recreates that atmosphere, and players are probably more prepared for the distractions," Morey said.

Whisenhunt has said throughout the season that his team reacts better the second time it has been through something. He’s counting on that this week.

"This week is a lot about distractions," Whisenhunt said, "and this is one distraction we’re not faced with for the first time . . . traveling, staying for an extended period of time, working in another facility and living out of a hotel.

"We have an idea of what works for us, and obviously, based on the (Jets) game, what didn’t work for us."

Nfl Sports Apparel For The Super Bowl

January 27th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Get Into Superbowl, Nfl Sports Apparel

Football is very big in the United States and proof of this is how Superbowl has beaten the Olympics as the most awaited sports event on this side of the globe. That claim may be up for debate but a lot of things will support this declaration. The National Football League (NFL) players and their teams are proper nouns that are recognizable even by kids and some of its players have gone into movies and television by appearing in cameo roles.

It is not uncommon for kids to answer ‘I want to be an NFL player’ when asked what they want to be when they grow up and adults are not shy in admitting they dreamt of becoming NFL stars too. NFL has become a brand in itself with a logo that is familiar to millions of people all over the world even the non sports fans.

The Superbowl is also dubbed as the Oscar’s of the advertising world and because of this it has attracted big brands into investing millions if not billions of dollars for a 30 second exposure during the Superbowl. Advertising agencies agree that Superbowl is the one place you would want to launch your new advertisement or campaign because of the number of people watching and because the very next day the media will be making their reviews of what they saw.

One of the brands and the advertising agencies that have been quite a permanent fixture in the Superbowl is BBDO with their advertisements for Pepsi. They admit that it takes months and quite a number of teams and presentations before they are able to choose that one great advertisement. Some of the more popular commercials that became Superbowl hits are the ones featuring big stars like Britney Spears and Michael Jackson.

Even the halftime show of Superbowl is one to watch out for. In this area, it is the entertainment industry’s turn to do their raves and rants the next day. Remember the Janet Jackson eye pooping fiasco? Well, only in Superbowl!

Big stars like Justin Timberlake and bands like U2 and the Rolling Stones are just three of the performers that have been featured in Superbowl halftime. So when it’s NFL Superbowl fever you gotta be part of it even just by buying NFL merchandise. Wearing an NFL shirt or cap will immediately make you feel like you are part of the fanfare even without picking a team to root for.

Cardinals Super Turnaround

January 26th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Arizona Cardinals - The Biggest Loser in NFL History
By Rick Grantham

In their nine decades of playing football, the Arizona Cardinals have lost a total of 664 games, 57% of all the games they have played. Since 1947, they have won only one playoff game, and since 1984, had only one winning season. In 86 years, they have won over ten games five times compared to the Philadelphia Eagles, England Patriots, and Indianapolis Colts, which have all won over ten games, at least five times in the past seven years.

The Cardinals are the oldest American football club, originally formed in 1989 and was then named the Morgan Athletic Club, based in Chicago. The team was then called the Racine Normals (because they were located in Chicago’s Racine Avenue) and was later changed to the Racine Cardinals. It was then that they started wearing dark red uniforms which were taken from the football college team, the Chicago Maroons. It was in 1920 that the Cardinals officially became a member of the NFL and was renamed the Chicago Cardinals. During World War II, in 1944, the Cardinals merged temporarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and were thus referred to as the Card-Pitt team, just for one season.

Cardinal migrating to super bowl

In 1960, the Cardinals then moved to St. Louis Missouri and became the St. Louis Cardinals. They earned the moniker "The Big Red" due to a series of success in the 1970s. After failing to acquire a stadium in St. Louis solely for football, the Cardinals moved to Phoenix in 1988 and were named the Phoenix Cardinals. By 1994, it was officially known as the Arizona Cardinals.

Today, they are based in Glendale Arizona in the outskirts of Phoenix and are members of the National Football Conference, Western Division and the National Football League (NFL). In 2006, all home games of the Cardinals were played at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, instead of the Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe where they played at for 17 years.

No Super Bowl for the Cardinals

The Cardinals is one of six NFL teams who never made it to the Super Bowl including the Detroit Lions, the Cleveland Browns, the New Orleans Saints, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team’s only NFL championship game was in 1947, two decades before the Super Bowl was instituted. The other championship was in 1925, eight easy before NFL held championship games. Since 1947, the Cardinals have qualified only five times for the playoffs and won only one playoff game, a poor record shared only by one other team, the Detroit Lions.

Cardinals’ Big Turnaround

In recent years, however, the Cardinals is looking at a major overhaul and makeover with the son’s owner Michael Bidwill taking over the team in lieu of his father, William V. Bidwill. Michael took over as president and has recently invested on a new stadium, a marketing staff, and a larger share of revenues. Just last year, 2007, the Cardinals saw an increase of 20% revenue, to $189 million. The team is not worth $888 million, a 13% increase from the year before. Today, they are attracting better players and spending on equipment and training.

What To Look For When Purchasing Nfl Apparel

When it comes to buying a gift for a man, you probably can’t go wrong with NFL apparel. Regardless of the age of the male in question, or his relation to you, chances are he likes football. Young boys, pre-teens, teens and adults alike enjoy a good game of football. So if you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day gift for your boyfriend, a birthday present for your brother, a Christmas present for your uncle or a Father’s Day present for your father, look no further than a jersey or t-shirt that represents his favorite team. We women often find holidays and special occasions to be a challenge, so it’s nice to know there’s a somewhat easy solution for buying a gift for the special guy in our life.

Since most men are interested in sports, and football is almost always a favorite, look no further than NFL apparel. Football is a world of its own for the man who is into the sport. Chances are you know a guy like this, a guy that lives, eats and breathes football. He roots for his favorite team, decorates for the Super Bowl, and follows the happenings of his favorite team players religiously. Why not indulge this hobby, interest and love with a special NFL shirt just for him?

NFL stands for National Football League, and NFL apparel typically consists of t-shirts and football jerseys. The jerseys are done up in official team colors, and often come numbered and labeled with the team players’ names. Official NFL apparel will always accurately represent team colors as well as team member numbers, names and positions. Football players themselves wear NFL apparel during the game, so it makes perfect sense that fans would want to be similarly attired!

The best NFL sports apparel are the clothing items and accessories that have true-to-life colors, numbers and team member names on them. High quality materials and attention to detail ensure high quality articles of clothing that will last and last. Look for high quality fabrics that mimic the real deal, accurate stitching and striping, and inclusion of team numbers and names so that your guy can match his favorite team.

The nice thing about NFL apparel is that sizes usually run small enough for babies to show team spirit, and go large enough to ensure that fans of all sizes will be able to wear their team colors and show off their enthusiasm.

Buying Super Bowl Tickets

January 22nd, 2009   Filed Under The Super Bowl

 Buyer Beware

-

Guide To Buying Super Bowl Tickets

There is a lot of excitement when it comes to the Super Bowl. The NFL holds the Super Bowl once every year and it has clearly become a great American past time. More people watch the Super Bowl on television than any other sporting event.

If you are an avid football fan, then there is nothing like attending the game in person. But for the average Joe, it can be a tough deal to pull off.

The NFL holds a drawing every year and selects a number of fans from the general public. If you are lucky enough to be chosen, you have the option of purchasing two tickets. But don’t get excited yet. The number of entries is huge and the tickets are limited. The NFL doesn’t state exactly how many tickets are distributed in this random drawing, but you can be sure the demand far outweighs the supply.

Unless you are a celebrity or have some inside connection, the only other option is to purchase the tickets on the secondary market. You’ll spend many times face value to watch the best of the best face off in this championship game.

With the huge amount of demand and the high price brought by these tickets, you should always be careful of fraud. With a single ticket worth thousands of dollars, you should be aware of those printing counterfeit tickets.

There are some good options available that will limit your possibilities of getting fake tickets.

1. The best precaution is to purchase the tickets from someone you know. This will be the only guarantee that you will be purchasing authentic tickets.

2. eBay can be a good option if you are careful and do some research. Buy from a seller that has a long history of good feedback. eBay now requires sellers to accept payment either by credit card or Paypal. So if something goes wrong, you’ll have the option of filing a claim with your credit card company.

3. Craigslist maybe a good option to find a multitude of tickets for sale, but it doesn’t provide the same level of buyer protection as eBay. On Craigslist, sellers can remain anonymous and accept payment by cash. If Craigslist turns out to be the option you choose, I’d recommend buying from a seller that would accept payment via credit card or Paypal.

If the transaction is more than a thousand dollars, you may even request the seller provide you with a Bill of Sale along with a copy of their driver’s license. This way, if something goes wrong, you will not be dealing with an anonymous seller and will have civil options to pursue.

Super Bowl Sunday Is The Biggest Unofficial Holiday

Super Bowl Sunday Is The Biggest Unofficial Holiday

In the 40 years since the first Super Bowl was played between Green Bay and Kansas City, Super Bowl Sunday has grown into an unofficial national holiday that has shopping and economic effects rivaling Christmas, Thanksgiving and other major official holidays. Whether it’s a casual get together with a few friends or a lavish, catered party, 125 million Americans celebrated the Super Bowl in some fashion in 2006. Even those with little interest in football get in on the craze, if only to watch the commercials.

Understanding this unique opportunity, advertisers spare no expense to showcase their products and services during the Super Bowl. Advertisers paid up to $2.5 million dollars for each 30 seconds of advertising during Super Bowl XL in 2006. Agencies work on their advertisements all year, and the Super Bowl has become the unofficial Academy Awards of advertising. There are almost as many websites and television programs analyzing the advertisements as there are analyzing the game.

The food and beverage industry also profits from Super Bowl Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday is second only to Thanksgiving in the amount of food that Americans prepare and consume. In the weeks leading up to Super Bowl XL, Americans spent $55 million dollars on food for their Super Bowl parties and spent ten million hours preparing it. Since it is estimated that an average of 17 people attend each Super Bowl Party, these figures are not surprising.

The king of Super Bowl food is the avocado. More avocados are sold in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl that at any other time of the year. It is estimated that 12 million pounds of avocados are purchased and turned into guacamole for Super Bowl parties. Since guacamole requires chips, 15,000 tons of chips are consumed as well. All that food needs washing down and soda and beer sales also top out during the weeks preceding the big game.

It’s not just food and beverage manufacturers who profit. Millions of dollars are spent on party supplies like paper plates, cups and plastic cutlery. Electronics stores also benefit. After all, you need that big-screen TV in order to properly appreciate the game. Even sales of antacids spike on the Monday following Super Bowl Sunday. There’s a good reason for that. The estimated total time that party-goers take to consume all that carefully prepared food: 15 minutes.

Arizona Cardinals Coach Whisenhunt

January 20th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Coach Ken Whisenhunt Leads Cardinals in the Super Bowl

2008 Arizona Cardinals Draft Report
By Whitney Alen

The Arizona Cardinals will play their 89th season in 2008, and will be attempting to improve upon their 8-8 record from last year. Not impressive per say, but definitely an improvement from their gloomy 5-11 record from two years ago. This will also be Coach Ken Whisenhunt’s second year in leading the team. The head coach didn’t do so bad in transforming an underachieving team into formidable competition, all stats considered. Whisenhunt’s strategy is to focus on offense, so one can’t help but closely analyze the 2008 NFL Draft for the Arizona Cardinals.

The team chose seven players this season, starting with cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from Tennessee State. Next, there was defensive end Calais Campbell from Miami-Florida, wide receiver Early Doucet from Louisiana State University, defensive end Kenny Iwebema from Iowa, running back Tim Hightower from Richmond, defensive end Chris Harrington from Texas A&M and offensive tackle Brandon Keith from Northern Iowa. Since the team was hoping to fill some key positions like offensive tackle and cornerback, structurally speaking, the draft was a success. Whisenhunt hoped that the 2008 draft would be seen as positively as the past four drafts of the Cardinals, which were rated as excellent by most NFL experts.

What was the reaction from the media this year round? The reaction to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was mixed, though no one denies the great performance he gave at the Senior Bowl. Others question whether or not Rodgers-Cromartie had any true competition at that game, while others claim he wasn’t yet fully developed for a major league career. Campbell was also questioned by many as a player who doesn’t seem to fit in with Arizona’s defensive team. Campbell, Iwebema, and Harrington have certainly impressed the right people in college, but didn’t seem to stand out when compared to other draft choices this year. The most popular players were actually the later round picks, such as Doucet and Hightower. Some considered Doucet to be one of the top five wide receiver prospects for the 2008 Draft. The fact that he scored 57 receptions, 525 yards, and 5 touchdowns is statistically enough to have put him in the top three.

A few names withstanding, the Arizona Cardinals draft left some fans feeling uneasy. One potential problem with is that there were no sure-thing playmakers this time around. Instead of a fantastic first round pick, the team seemed content with several developmental-stage players. This could be taken as bad news or a sign of confidence coming from a team with an already beaming roster. Experts remain doubtful that the status quo can carry the team to another successful season. It looks like the draft pick players will have to be introduced quickly and developed quickly if they hope to survive in a competitive season.

Don’t count Whisenhunt out however. In fact, in 2007 the Cardinals’ 8-8 score was actually their best record since 1998. Things are looking up for the Cardinals and the team-reinforcing draft may be a sign of a broader strategy unfolding.

Edgerrin James : Arizona Cardinals Running Back

January 20th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Edgerrin James : Arizona Cardinals Running Back
By Bob Johnson

A native of Immokalee, Florida, Edgerrin James was born on August 1, 1978. Currently playing the position of quarterback for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, James has had a lot of practice when it comes to competition.

After being recruited directly out of Immokalee High School in Florida, Edgerrin James enrolled in the University of Miami where he became one of the most successful running backs in the school’s history. Not only did he rank second in all-time rushing yards at the University of Miami, Edgerrin James was also the only running back in the university’s history to post two consecutive seasons with 1,000+ rushing yards. In addition, he holds the school’s record for most rushing touchdowns in a single season, which is currently 17, and also ranks first with the most 100+ rushing games.

Cardinals Running Back Edgerrin James

From the University of Miami, Edgerrin James was drafted in the 1999 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. After signing a seven year contract, which was said to be worth $49 million, the Associated Press named Edgerrin James as the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

As James’ contract with the Colts expired, he immediately signed a new deal on March 12, 2006 with the Arizona Cardinals. Reportedly worth $30 million, the new agreement is said to consist of four years and is the Cardinal’s largest free agent signing in history.

In addition to his many accomplishments on the field, Edgerrin James is making his mark outside of the 50 yard line. He has one daughter and has donated $250,000 to the Univeristy of Miami, which is the largest to ever be made to the university by one of it’s former athletes. In addition, he has established the Edgerrin James Foundation, which is a charitable organization for underprivileged children and families.

As the 2006 NFL season approaches, fans will continue to watch James as he hopes to lead the Cardinals to a SuperBowl victory. While it is very early to be thinking about the last game, most athletes strive toward that same goal with every step taken on the field. Fans will surely be delighted in the Cardinal’s newest quarterback and will anxiously await to see what he has to offer.

Will The Cardinals Reach The Super Bowl

January 20th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Cardinals Super Bowl Chances

Will the Arizona Cardinals Make it to the Playoffs?
By Rick Grantham

It seems that the Arizona Cardinals have done their job in this season’s games. Now, professional football in the desert have become a tough competition. The Cardinals are on their way to getting a division title, an achievement they have not had for the past 33 years of their franchise. The next five weeks through the games are very crucial for the team to be able to clinch the division title.

The team’s past games showed that they have indeed played great football against really outstanding teams in the NFL. They have proven themselves to be able to step up to the challenge of their intimidators. Every game in the league is a big game for the Cardinals because they still have a lot to show to their fans. Thanks to Coach Whisenhunt, the team is slowly straying away from the label of being the greatest losers in NFL history. They are actually in a really good position to get into the playoffs.

The team’s last division title dates way back 1975 when they were still called the St. Louis cardinals. The next year that their presence was felt in the playoff series was when they made it as a wild card in the 1998 season. With the recent favorable events, Whisenhunt attributes this largely to the environment that they have created which he greatly believes has become really tough every time the games are brought back home.

Apart from this, the team’s quarterback, Kurt Warner, is given credit for the recent success of the Arizona Cardinals. Warner is known to be really tough and competitive on the field. He has continued to wow fans by setting his fourth consecutive record of a 300 yard pass by doing a 395 yard pass during the games against the Seahawks. Whisenhunt realizes the importance of Warner’s presence in his team because the latter acts like the holding glue of the team which makes them more motivated and cooperative with each other.

Over time, the team has improved significantly in terms of confidence and togetherness. In the field, this is observed because the players know that they can count on each other during tough situations. Becoming closer as a team has improved their performance immensely. Teamwork was one of the lacking areas of the Cardinals before but now that they are slowly getting the hang of it, all we can do is wait and see how teamwork can change the tides.

The division is not yet over and the Cardinals still have a lot of challenges to face. Nevertheless, they are on the right side of the boat and have become the odds-on favorite to win the west division of the NFC. But nothing is final yet unless they go on to win the next few games which will make them qualify for the playoffs. The task bears heavily on both Whisenhunt and Warner, but this shouldn’t be that difficult to accomplish if the team is really set out to make history again.

Cardinals 2007 Draft Helps Super Bowl Chances

January 20th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Cardinals Go From 5-7 To 2009 Super Bowl

2007 Arizona Cardinals Draft Preview
By Larry Cook

The Arizona Cardinals were supposed to be one of the NFL’s improved teams in 2006, perhaps making a trip to the playoffs. They had all the talent in the world on offense, with a star Running Back, two of the most explosive receivers in the league, and a Heisman Trophy quarterback to boot. Instead they matched their record from 2005, finishing with a horrible 5-11 record and were never a threat to make the postseason.

The Bears-Cardinals game is where there season took a turn for the worst. The Cardinals took a 20-0 lead into halftime behind a pair of touchdown passes from Matt Leinart on National TV. Chicago then outscored the Cardinals 24-3 in the second half, with none of the Bears’ touchdowns coming from their offensive unit. Edgerrin James set an NFL futility record for most carries in a game while averaging less than 2 yards per attempt. He had only 55 yards on 36 carries, averaging only 1.5 yards per carry. This was largely due to a lack of run blocking, an area the Cardinals have to address in the offseason, starting with the draft.

Arizona Cardinals Advance to Super Bowl

Leonard Davis was drafted as the second overall pick in 2001 for the Cardinals with hopes that he would anchor the offensive line at the left tackle position. He has not produced in six seasons, even when the coaching staff moved him to the Guard position which is a lot easier to excel at. Replacing Davis is a top priority, and Joe Thomas of Wisconsin would be the ideal selection. The problem is that Thomas will likely fall before they get a chance at him. Arizona could settle for Penn State’s Levi Brown or Central Michigan’s Joe Staley in the second round.

If Thomas is gone, the focus definitely has to turn to the defensive side of the ball. The Cardinals ranked 29th in Total Defense last season with a poor defensive line and secondary. Arizona’s 24.3 points per game yielded was only better than 3 teams in all of the NFL. The Cardinals’ defensive line got used and abused last season. Bertrand Berry has had back-to-back season ending surgeries in 2005 and 2006 which included torn triceps last year. He has appeared in just 18 games since 2004, after having a career year when he led the NFC in sacks with 14.5 total.

The uncertainty surrounding Berry has Arizona taking a good look at Clemson’s Gaines Adams with the No. 5 pick. Adams would be able to reek havoc in the 4-3 pass rush, and could easily become the centerpiece of the defense. Strong Safety and hard hitting Adrian Wilson is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance in the secondary. Cornebacks Antrel Rolle, David Macklin and Eric Green were far from impressive in 2006, and free safety Robert Griffith is likely to retire as he is washed up. Arizona will be stockpiling defensive backs in the draft to help solidify their secondary for sure.

The Cardinals should have no problem putting the ball in the end zone in 2007 if they can improve on the offensive line. Leinart, James, and receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin form a strong offensive nucleus that will only get better as long as they can stay away from injuries. New head coach Ken Whisenhunt is coming over from the Steelers and will be emphasizing on running the ball. This will create more openings in the defensive secondary of opposing teams by making them respect the run. It will also allow the Cardinals to put teams away if they can run the ball. Russ Grimm came over from Pittsburgh with Whisenhunt to be an assistant coach and help the offensive line. Arizona will score points, but it will be up to the moves they make on the defensive side of the ball as to whether or not they can make the playoffs. Look for the Cardinals to select the majority of their draft picks on defensive players in 2007.

Cardinals Prove Experts Wrong - Advance to Super Bowl

January 20th, 2009   Filed Under Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl

Ok, week eleven and the Arizona Cardinals were getting no respect from the "experts". Well, the cream rises and so much for expert opinion.

Top Five 2009 Super Bowl Contenders

Now that we’re in Week 11 of the NFL season, people across the world are planning Christmas shopping preparing their Super Bowl parties and studying up on NFL football lines to lay down Super Bowl futures bets as soon as possible. Sure, it’s not as awesome as picking the champion from the start of the season, but "I called it! I told you (insert team here) would win it, way back in Week 11!" is still a verbal knockout when comparing sporting wits with your friends. Depending on the NFL football odds, there’s still a killing to be made on NFL props and futures - however, maybe not as much as my 100-1 pre-season bet that nearly panned out on the Tampa Bay Rays.

In any event, don’t come up short - check out our list of 2009 Super Bowl picks, and cash in on those bragging rights!

5. Carolina Panthers

A rugged defense and a high-octane offense have the Panthers sitting at 8-2 in a tough NFC South. In that respect, Carolina is very unconventional. Tough defensive teams generally utilize clock control and run methodical offensive schemes, however the Panthers love to take to the air. Quarterback Jake Delhomme is regarded as the least accurate pivot in the NFL, but that’s because he hurls the ball 60 yards downfield so darn often. When he’s feeling tame, however, Delhomme has a stellar running back duo of Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams to fall back on.

The Panthers will remain significant underdogs on NFL betting lines to win the Vince Lombardi trophy, however they certainly have all the tools to pull off an upset.

4. Dallas Cowboys

After a Week 1 injury to the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady, the Cowboys became the de facto Super Bowl favorites on NFL lines. However, ‘America’s Team’ suffered a crushing injury of their own - Jessica Simpson-courting Tony Romo went down as well, leaving the fearsome duo of Brad Johnson and Brooks Bollinger to take the reins. Now that Dallas is 6-4, this could be a big underdog play - Romo is back, his hand is healthy, and he has a new target in Roy Williams to throw to.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers

An injury to running back Willie Parker mid-season was supposed to be the end of the road for the Steelers, however, they have actually improved because of it. Sex Boat Scandal veteran Mewelde Moore stepped in and filled Parker’s shoes perfectly, and has now been integrated into the offense as an effective flex back. Pittsburgh might not have the world’s best receiving corps, but it could run the ball down team’s throat en route to another Super Bowl this season.

2. New York Giants

Offshore sportsbooks gave the Giants very little respect by not making them pre-season Super Bowl betting favorites, however the G-Men have clawed their way near the top of that list anyways. New York has dominated teams with an efficient offense and suffocating defense. Many pundits are suggesting that quarterback Eli Manning may be better than his brother Peyton - and if he can defy the NFL betting odds and take home a second consecutive title, that would be 100% true.

1. Tennessee Titans

If defense wins championships, then you might as well hand the Tennessee Titans the Super Bowl hardware right now. To put it into perspective how good the Titans ‘D’ is, old man Kerry Collins has led the team to an undefeated start to the season. The 1996 Pro Bowler just might be in line for his very first Super Bowl championship - go out and bet on the 2009 Super Bowl!

Boss Bruce Springsteen Plays Super Bowl 43

Cardinals, Steelers, and Bruce Springsteen Play Super Bowl 43

Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl Boss

Throughout his 40+year career, Springsteen has earned several awards for his work, including 18 Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. He has sold more than 65 million albums in the U.S. and 120 million worldwide.

Springsteen was born in 1949 and raised in a working class family in New Jersey. At an early age he was inspired to play music by Elvis Presley. In the 1960s Springsteen played in various bands and honed his musical skills. In 1972 Springsteen signed a record deal with Columbia Records and recruited many of his fellow New Jersey musicians for the formation of the E Street Band. Springsteen’s first album was a critical success and a commercial failure. However Springsteen found overall success with his second release, ‘Born to Run.’ Triumphantly, Springsteen appeared on the cover of Time magazine and its competing magazine in the same week. Rolling Stone magazine would later call a performance during this period one of the ‘50 Moments That Changed Rock and Roll.’

To date, his most famous albums are ‘Born to Run’ and ‘Born in the U.S.A.’; both epitomize his penchant for working class America themes. Springsteen is also widely recognized for his album ‘The Rising,’ which he released in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks. ‘The Rising’ was Springsteen’s first studio album in 7 years and his first with the E Street Band in 18 years. The album was a critical and commercial success and is popularly referred to as the return of ‘The Boss.’ ‘The Rising’ was one of two albums to receive Rolling Stone magazine’s highest rating of five stars for 2002.

Springsteen is married to fellow E Street Band member singer Patti Scialfa. The couple have three children and reside on a horse farm in New Jersey. Springsteen was previously married to the actress Julianne Phillips in the mid to late 1980s. Springsteen and his wife and family have managed for the most part to remain out of the spotlight of celebrity magazines like People, Star, Us Weekly and OK! magazine.

The E Street Band was inactive from the end of 1988 through early 1999, except for a brief reunion in 1995. Current members of the band are Springsteen, Garry Tallent, Clarence Clemons, Max Weihberg, Roy Bittan, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, Patti Scialfa, Soozie Tyrell and Charles Giordano. For more on these talented musicians, read Rolling Stone magazine archives.

Jennifer Hudson to Sing National Anthem at Super Bowl

January 20th, 2009   Filed Under Super Bowl Halftime Show

Jennifer Hudson will Sing the National Anthem at Super Bowl

In what is likely to be her first public appearance since the murder of her mother, brother, and nephew, Jennifer Hudson will sing the national anthem at the year’s biggest sporting event.

The teams that will be playing in Tampa, Florida in this year’s Super Bowl are still yet to be decided. But everyone in attendance and watching around the world will be treated to a national anthem sung by American Idol phenom Jennifer Hudson. Hudson has been in the news most recently because of the horrific murder of her mother, brother, and nephew only a few months ago. Her sister’s estranged husband has been arrested as the prime suspect in the murders and he is currently in jail awaiting trial.

In addition to her success on American Idol, Jennifer Hudson already has an Oscar on her resume, a result of her win for Best Supporting Actress in the smash hit, Dreamgirls. She also had successful acting turns in the Sex and the City movie, as well as The Secret Life of Bees.

The Super Bowl typically draws one of the biggest viewing audiences in the world every year - and this year should be no different. In addition to Hudson’s anticipated performance of the national anthem, Bruce Springsteen will be performing the halftime show. For those that will be watching the game for the game itself, and not the entertainment, this year seems to offer at least a more palatable selection of singers. This year is conspicuously without any boy bands or pop princesses - but I just can’t imagine that I’m not going to see the Jonas Brothers during the Super Bowl. No way that Fox is going to miss out on that slam dunk of a marketing opportunity.

As the world watches, hopefully Jennifer Hudson’s performance will help to bring her a sense of normalcy after such a trying period in her life.

Although the history of the Super Bowl is fairly recent and brief, yet it is as fascinating as any other. Check out some Super Bowl lore here.

Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl History Although it may seem as if the Super Bowl has existed forever, actually the first Super Bowl took place quite recently. Super Bowl 1 made its first appearance merely 39 years back, in the early part of 1967.

In that year, the National Football League, or NFL, and the American Football League, the AFL, played against each other to win the world championship. In 1970, the two leagues were merged, with the Super Bowl becoming the championship game of the NFL. The name ‘Super Bowl’ itself can be traced back to Lamar Hunt who suggested it because of the super ball toy his daughter had and on the basis of the fact that a variety of bowl-shaped stadiums were the venues where college football games were played. Although the press and football fans had already begun using the shorter term for the championship, it was only in 1969 that the original name ‘AFL-NFL World Championship Game’ was officially replaced by ‘Super Bowl’.

The NFL’s Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowl championships, which caused quite a bit of concern amongst the AFL teams’ owners. But a huge upset in the history of Super Bowl was created in the third game, which was won by the New York Jets when they defeated the Baltimore Colts. And, in Super Bowl 4 the Minnesota Vikings were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs of AFL, which was the final championship game before the two leagues merged. The AFL teams were joined by three NFL teams, making a total of thirteen teams, creating the American Football Conference, or AFC, while the rest of the thirteen teams were formed into the National Football Conference, or NFC. Ever since, the champions of the NFC and the AFC have been playing the Super Bowl. The team that wins gets Vince Lombardi trophy, which has been named after the Green Bay Packers’ coach.

The location where the Super Bowl will be played is decided by the NFL about three to five years in advance, on the basis of various cities competing with each other to host the event. Usually, the southern cities of the US are given preference or those cities that have domed stadiums. More than half of Super Bowl games have been played in Los Angeles, Miami, and New Orleans. Some of the leading champions are the New England Patriots, the Washington Redskins, the Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Dallas Cowboys. And with the likes of leading legends such as Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, and many more, the popularity of the Super Bowl has always been high.

The three major television networks of the US broadcast the Super Bowl game every year, keeping millions of viewers glued to their TV sets, plus of course the thousands in the stands. With the ending of the regular football season, the playoffs are kicked off, wagers are placed, and the seats in the stadium sell out for one of the most spectacular sporting events in the world. Each year, as the last Sunday in the month of January or the first Sunday in the month of February begins to approach, every football fan in the nation awaits with bated breath for Super Bowl history to be made again
